Discovering the Costa del Sol

The Costa del Sol (The Coast of Sun) is located in the province of Malaga in Southern Spain 36.79 degrees north 4.48 degrees west. It is bordered to the east by the cliffs of Maro on the Costa Tropical and by Punto Chullera to the west on the Costa de la Luz. The province is serviced by 3 principle airports, the main one being Malaga, to the west Gibraltar and Serville to the north of the province.

The Costa del Sol boasts 160km of continual coastline experiencing an average of 325 days of glorious sunshine.

The coast has much to offer. Whether you are looking for culture, history, night life, fashion, fine cuisine, sandy beaches, or sport the Costa del Sol has it all on offer.

The Costa del Sol is famed for its many golf courses, indeed the area is often referred to as the Costa del Golf. There are at least 50 Championship courses to choose from, along with a wide variety of water sports and top class tennis clubs. Challenging skiing with numerous runs can be found at the Sierra Nevada Granada. A resort for the beginner to the more advanced skier. At just over a 2 hour drive from Malaga, it is possible to be sun bathing on a sandy beach in the morning and skiing in the afternoon!

The numerous National Parks provide a sanctuary for many species of wild life, flora and fauna and all are in easy reach from the coastal resorts.

The Costa del Sol is a world class destination of great historic and artistic heritage. A small sample of the sites to visit include the Alhambra Palace in Granada, El Torcal, Malaga city, the old town of Marbella.

Puerto Banús

Also close to hand is Golf Valley, situated around the area of Nueva Andalucia. Here can be found numerous top class, championship golf courses to test all abilities. Also close at hand are some of the best beaches and beach clubs to be found anywhere on the Costa del Sol.

The centre of Marbella is just a few minutes drive away. Visit the Old Town and Orange Square and be intoxicated by the orange blossom and discover the fine array of international cuisine on offer. Near both of these locations can be found some of the finest real estate in Europe epitomised by locations such as La Zagaleta, El Madronel, Sierra Blanca and Camojan.

The Costa del Sol prides itself on its cosmopolitan lifestyle with literally dozens of different nationalities living, working and holidaying together. The coast is known as one of the top destinations for the gay tourist in Europe particularly in the areas of Malaga, Torremolinos and Marbella.

Mijas

Mijas, located in the Spanish province of Malaga on the Costa del Sol, is a charming resort which is divided into two distinct areas. Mijas Costa which is the busy beachfront resort stretching from Fuengirola and along the coastline to the well know resort named Calahonda. and then there is the mountain village, Mijas Pueblo, one of the prettiest in Spain.

Mijas Pueblo is a typical Andaluz village of whitewashed houses nestling high on the mountainside with spectacular views down to the Mediterranean sea below and has a scenic backdrop of pine forests. From the village of Mijas you can easily reach within 25 minutes to the west, Marbella and Puerta Banus and to the east Malaga city.

Tourism and the expat resident population have made their mark on Mijas which has a distinctly cosmopolitan flavour with international restaurants, clubs and bars. Yet the municipality has managed to retain its 'old world charm' with a reputation for the discerning holiday maker. Mijas has a delightful maze of narrow cobbled streets and archways with picture postcard houses with balconies ablaze with brightly coloured flowers.

Local arts and crafts thrive here, notably hand made linen and wicker items. The pueblo is also noted for it's delicious local bread, honey and almond cakes. It is populated with typical Andalucian tapas bars where you can sip a refreshing drink and choose from a selection of delicious small dishes of various tapas. There are also many more sophisticated restaurants where you can enjoy a wonderful meal set out on the terraces during the evening.

At the entrance to the village is the ancient spring which still provides natural mineral water from a tap in the wall. A major attraction for visitors is the surviving tradition of the donkey taxis which trek around the village.

Fuengirola

Down on the coast, approximately 15 minutes by car, is the bustling town of Fuengirola with it's long stretches of beaches, water sports, waterfront shops, bars, restaurants and stretching back from the beach, a busy town with all facilities including bus station, train service which goes to all points east, stopping at Malaga city. There are also indoor markets and several open-air markets to visit for fresh produce and local wares.

We would like to thank everyone (but especially David) at Andersen Fox for their help during our recent purchase in Spain. From beginning to completion, and beyond, they have been extremely attentive and kind. Looking back it is hard to believe, but true, that we went from making first contact to having an offer accepted within two weeks.

David got back to our initial inquiry by email and we arranged to come over to Spain for a viewing. David met up with us as arranged on the Saturday morning and took us to see the property that we had picked out plus three others that he had matched to our brief. It was very exciting and David answered our questions without ever being pushy. We knew within minutes which property we wanted, but we left David on the Saturday afternoon promising to talk things over between ourselves. A quick email was all that was needed to arrange a second viewing on the Monday. We made an offer and David negotiated on our behalf with the vendor. Offer accepted, David introduced us to Raul, our solicitor, who did all the legal work for us.

Our week in Spain concluded with visits to the Notario and a local bank. Everyone was very helpful and friendly. Back in England, David kept in touch. Obviously we had to arrange documentation and finance, but things went quickly and smoothly. We completed at the beginning of April and a week later, we arrived in Spain to be met by David with the keys. David told us that we could get in touch with him if we had any questions. Obviously there have been one or two things that we have not known and David has been very approachable and helped us out as he promised. We are delighted with our new home in Spain and very grateful to Andersen Fox, who we recommend wholeheartedly to anyone who is thinking of making the move over here.

Many thanks, Chris and Denise Hanson
